01. März 2010 | Sprung ins kalte Wasser … Jumping in at the Deep End

Momentan stecken wir in Software-Evaluation… auf der Suche nach dem optimalen Animationswerkzeug. Nachdem wir diesbezüglich in Photoshop schon einiges durchexerziert haben (was übrigens nicht so unpraktikabel war, wie man vielleicht meinen könnte), naht nun unweigerlich der Punkt, da wir für für die Animation ein eigenes Programm benötigen – sprich eines, in dem man so animieren kann wie an einem klassischen Leuchttisch mit Papier, Bleistift, Drehscheibe und Unterlicht. Was das angeht, sind wir noch komplett unbeleckt und springen ins kalte Wasser. Wir haben uns mal die Demoversion von TV Paint angeschaut… und gelangen nach Herumprobieren, Herumfluchen und einigen Fingerübungen zu folgenden Zwischenergebnissen (das erste Studienjahr Filmhochschule lässt grüßen):

Und dann fiel uns ja noch auf: Das Studio – und mit ihm der Blog – sind dieser Tage ein Jahr alt respektive online! – Ein Jahr, das, wie wir finden, rapide verflogen ist, dafür aber für das Projekt etliche Wegmarken bereit hielt: von der Fertigstellung der Layouts und Backgrounds über die finalisierten Character Designs bis zum getimten Animationslayout. Und parallel dazu natürlich noch Brötchen verdienen. Wir freuen uns, dass wir so weit gut zusammen funktionieren, bis dato keine nennenswerten Stolpersteine am Wegesrand aufgetaucht sind (wir haben sogar Spaß!) und wir unsere Arbeit (trotz Berlin-Mitte vor der Haustür) in ruhiger, heimeliger und täglich verkaterter Atmosphäre tun können. Glückwünsche jeglicher Art nehmen wir hier gerne entgegen …

These days we’re deep into evaluating software … in search for nothing but the best animation tool. We’ve had quite some ‚training lessons‘ in Photoshop already (which turned out to be not that impractical as one might think); but now we finally must purchase an appropriate program – one that we can use like an oldfashioned lightbox with an animation disc, paper and pencil. Concerning this we’re absolute newbies, jumping in at the deep end. We had a look at the demo version of TV Paint and after some trial and error, swearing and practising like back in film school days we’re facing the first results (see above).

Besides we noticed that the studio – and this blog – got one year old! Time passed by way too fast; but anyway there were several milestones along the way such as finishing the layouts and backgrounds, the character designs and the animation layout, and, last but by no means least, earning money for a living. We’re very glad that our collaboration has flown smoothly so far and we didn’t encounter any major stumbling blocks (oh yes, we have fun, too!). And the best thing is: Despite having the heart of Berlin at our very doorstep we work in a quiet and comfortable atmosphere, two male cats playing around our feet every day. 11. November 2009 | Mitarbeiter des Tages II

Heutiger Mitarbeiter des Tages ist unser lieber Kollege Jim Albrand, der seit gestern das Studio mit uns teilt (selige Filmhochschulzeiten lassen grüßen) – und für EMPLOYEE OF THE DAY die erste Animation überhaupt herstellt. Darüber freuen wir uns ziemlich. Und wir verweisen schon mal mit Vergnügen auf seine Webpräsenz, wo es in Zukunft auch ein Demo zu sehen geben wird: www.pegbar.de

Jimmy hat für uns extra den Weg vom heimischen Cuxhaven nach Berlin-Mitte gemacht und seinen Trickkamerastand mitgebracht. Er animiert im Gegensatz zu uns nämlich noch traditionell auf Papier… und sorgt so nebenbei dafür, dass unser alter Leuchttisch nicht völlig nutzlos in der Ecke herumsteht.

Mit von der Partie ist Amber, Jimmys „kunterbunt durcheinander gekreuzte Straßenköter-Mischung“ (O-Ton) aus Dahab/Ägypten. Unsere Kater bewegen sich derzeit noch auf Sicherheitsabstand, wagen sich aber immer wieder mal vor, und wir gehen davon aus, dass es schon demnächst zu einem Gipfeltreffen kommt.

November 11th 2009: Employee of this day is our dear colleague Jim Albrand who shares the studio with us since yesterday (evoking quite some memories of our time at the film academy). Actually he’s working on the very first animation for our film and we’re really happy about this. We don’t wanna miss the opportunity to advise you of his website www.pegbar.de which is going to include a showreel in the future.

Jimmy made all the way from his hometown Cuxhaven to Berlin-Mitte and brought his camera stand with him. As opposed to us he still does animation the traditional way on paper… thus making sure our old drawing table doesn’t catch dust in the corner.

Amber, Jimmy’s „all in a tumble hybridized stray dog-mix“ (original quote) from Dahab/Egypt, joins the ranks. Our cats still keep a safe distance but dare to come closer from time to time; so we assume there will be a summit soon.
