11. November 2009 | Mitarbeiter des Tages II

Heutiger Mitarbeiter des Tages ist unser lieber Kollege Jim Albrand, der seit gestern das Studio mit uns teilt (selige Filmhochschulzeiten lassen grüßen) – und für EMPLOYEE OF THE DAY die erste Animation überhaupt herstellt. Darüber freuen wir uns ziemlich. Und wir verweisen schon mal mit Vergnügen auf seine Webpräsenz, wo es in Zukunft auch ein Demo zu sehen geben wird: www.pegbar.de

Jimmy hat für uns extra den Weg vom heimischen Cuxhaven nach Berlin-Mitte gemacht und seinen Trickkamerastand mitgebracht. Er animiert im Gegensatz zu uns nämlich noch traditionell auf Papier… und sorgt so nebenbei dafür, dass unser alter Leuchttisch nicht völlig nutzlos in der Ecke herumsteht.

Mit von der Partie ist Amber, Jimmys „kunterbunt durcheinander gekreuzte Straßenköter-Mischung“ (O-Ton) aus Dahab/Ägypten. Unsere Kater bewegen sich derzeit noch auf Sicherheitsabstand, wagen sich aber immer wieder mal vor, und wir gehen davon aus, dass es schon demnächst zu einem Gipfeltreffen kommt.

November 11th 2009: Employee of this day is our dear colleague Jim Albrand who shares the studio with us since yesterday (evoking quite some memories of our time at the film academy). Actually he’s working on the very first animation for our film and we’re really happy about this. We don’t wanna miss the opportunity to advise you of his website www.pegbar.de which is going to include a showreel in the future.

Jimmy made all the way from his hometown Cuxhaven to Berlin-Mitte and brought his camera stand with him. As opposed to us he still does animation the traditional way on paper… thus making sure our old drawing table doesn’t catch dust in the corner.

Amber, Jimmy’s „all in a tumble hybridized stray dog-mix“ (original quote) from Dahab/Egypt, joins the ranks. Our cats still keep a safe distance but dare to come closer from time to time; so we assume there will be a summit soon.

Nach Gestaltung der Hintergründe hat uns die Realität eingeholt. Hongkong bietet echtes und durchaus fröhliches Leben – und präsentiert sich auf engstem Raum dennoch als lärmende, nichtssagend-anonyme Fassade. Aus Begeisterung ermüdet stellen Paule & Alvin die Szenerie nach.

Just after finishing the background paintings we got caught by reality. Hongkong is a genuine and happily vivid place – and shows empty and meaningless facades on cramped space anyhow. Paule & Alvin get into it effortlessly.

11. August 2009 | Wir sind durch, die erste … We are done, Take 1

Der Sommer brät uns aufs Hirn und sorgt dafür, dass wir gerade ein bisschen abgefrühstückt sind (immerhin kann Paule voll entspannen).
Aber: Wir haben ALLE Hintergründe fertig!
Wir blicken auf 69 Stück, uns selbst gefallen sie schon mal gut – und, am wichtigsten, sie ergeben ein stimmungsvolles Gesamtbild. Grund zur Zufriedenheit.

In einem nächsten Schritt werden wir die Hintergründe testen: Wir bauen sie in unser Leica-Reel (abgefilmtes Storyboard) ein. Daran können wir sehen, wie die Szenerien mit ihren Stimmungen und Lichtsetzungen in der zeitlichen Abfolge wirken, und ob Erzählrhythmus und Kameraperspektiven so funktionieren, wie wir uns das gedacht haben. Außerdem werden wir unsere Charaktere als Dummies in die Hintergründe einsetzen und die Animation zu planen beginnen – unser nächstes (und größtes) Arbeitspaket.

Toll ist, dass unser Komponist Lars bereits viele akustische Stimmungen kreiert hat, die wir zu den Bildern verwenden können.

Summer heat could make us lazy, though we’re more on the way to be braindead.
But: We finished ALL the backgrounds and are really satisfied with the 69 pieces we created. Altogether they convey a dark and moody world we always imagined for our animation.

The next step will be an overall background test: rhythm, camera angles, light and the balance of colour are crucial and we have to judge if everything works properly. To achieve this we are going to replace the storyboard panels in our animatic with the finished backgrounds. Main poses of our characters will be set into the backgrounds and with that done we are able to start planning the next (and biggest) bucket of work – the animation.

It’s a gift that our composer Lars was working hard, too. He created many acoustic moments we can now play with and see if they fit with the images.

Und so sieht das ganze in der Mache aus – die fertigen Hintergründe werden ins Leica-Reel integriert.

15. April 2009 | Endlich & Hurra: It’s Springtime!

Die Fenster sind geputzt, die Festplatten aufgeräumt. Dabei wieder ein Relikt entdeckt.

Das ist ein erstes Inspirational, ein Entwurf einer möglichen TV-Sequenz:
Wetter – Glückspillen – Putzwahn – wenn da mal kein echtzeitlicher Zusammenhang besteht …

Wir haben uns mitten in Berlin unser Studio eingerichtet und der Blick geht direkt auf die Breitseite des Berliner Verlags und das ehemalige Forum Hotel. Schöne Inspirations-Ansichten für unser Projekt.

We just moved into the new studio with a view on the Berliner Verlag (publishing house) and the former Forum Hotel at Alexanderpatz. This seems to be the perfect inspriation for our project.

Das ist Alvin, einer unserer zwei Studiokater. Sie dösen bevorzugt auf Papier (und am liebsten auf den ganz frischen Layouts, die noch in Arbeit sind!).
