17. Januar 2014: Halbleben … half-life

Wir sind d u r c h – und das gilt in dem Fall doppelt.

Soll heissen: Das Compositing für unseren Film ist beendet, und somit auch unsere Arbeit als Animatoren und Bildgestalter. Alles, was für unseren Film ab jetzt noch folgt, sind im Prinzip „fremde“ Gewerke. Das zurückliegende Vierteljahr war diesbezüglich noch mal intensiv, praktisch nonstop rechnerdurchwacht und hat – gemeinsam mit dieser in Berlin immer wieder wundervollen Jahreszeit – zu zeitweise eher zombiehaften Befindlichkeiten beigetragen. (Zugegeben: ein Zustand, in dem Alex nach Ende des Clean Ups im Spätsommer sowieso schon war.)

Wir illustrieren das ganze mit ein paar Screenshots, die das Unterfangen so in etwa andeuten.

Nächste Stationen: Schnitt im Februar, Vertonung folgt auf dem Fuße, Endfertigung mutmaßlich im März. Die Sonne geht auf.

We’re d o n e – in every respect.

Which is to say: compositing for our film has been finished – and therefore our work as animators and image designers in general. Everything what follows will involve film-making crafts different from our own. The last 3+ months were intensive; days and nights were spent waking in front of the computer and together with the notoriously lovely Berlin winter led us to a somewhat zombie-like state. (Alright, Alex has been there since the end of clean up in late summer.)

To give you an idea of the whole operation we’ve added some screenshots below.

Next on our list: editing in February, immediately followed by sound recording and mixing, final rendering and output presumably in March. Here comes the sun.

11. April 2013 | Rauchsäulen, Licht, ein Schmetterling … columns of smoke, lights, and a butterfly

Während sich aus der Ursuppe allmählich die finale filmische Gestalt herausschält, werden die Rauchsäulen über unseren Köpfen länger.

Alex frisst sich seit einiger Zeit durch mehrere tausend Rohzeichnungen wie die kleine Raupe Nimmersatt… und harrt schon sehnsüchtig darauf, dass er endlich ein Schmetterling werden darf. An seiner Arbeit (Clean Up/Reinzeichnung) lässt sich das sich lichtende Chaos exemplarisch veranschaulichen:

Christoph indessen überarbeitet unsere Hintergründe, macht das Licht konsistent und absolviert nebenbei einen Crashkurs in After Effects – womit wir letztlich alles zusammenschrauben. Seine erste schöne (und zugleich umfängliche) Aufgabe besteht darin, Werbefilme in diverse Schaufenster respektive Straßenszenen einzumontieren. Im Einzelfall beläuft sich das auf etliche Dutzend pro Einstellung, mit anderen Worten: Auch über dem Rechner wird die Rauchsäule größer.

Die Filmchen selbst erstellt mit sicherem Händchen fürs Design Fabian Hofmann, der sich normalerweise mit Brillen beschäftigt (was für ein Zufall!), darüber hinaus aber so viele andere Talente hat, dass wir ihn an dieser Stelle mal gerne und gezielt bewerben wollen: http://www.fmhofmann.com, http://www.coblens.com

Und so wie’s momentan aussieht, mögen dies auf der Reststrecke nicht die letzten helfenden Hände gewesen sein.

While the final shape of our movie evolves out of the primordial soup step by step columns of smoke begin to thicken above our heads.

Alex has been feeding on thousands of rough drawings for some time now, like „the very hungry caterpillar“ … and awaits impatiently to transform into a butterfly.  His continuous work from rough animation to the clean ups of his characters exemplifies progress from chaos to the light at the end of the tunnel.

Meanwhile Christoph jumped into the blue-pencils of the backgrounds focusing on the consistency of mood lighting. And as if there wouldn’t be easier things to accomplish he just learns about the complexity of After Effects, our compositing software. One of his first tasks includes the montage of commercial clips into a large number of „black windows“ spread over several street backgrounds. In a worst case there are many dozens per take – or in other words: We also expect columns of smoke above our rendering machines soon.

Having a knack for design Fabian Hofmann developed these little moving advertisements for us although his usual business is the design and development of prescription and sun-glasses (what an incident!). Recently we have another supporter with us: Patrick Richter (http://voodoopimp.carbonmade.com.) will help us improve the lighting and bring some life into hundreds of advert street signs in our world.

21. Februar 2010 | Feels like Beaker

Zur Zeit fühlt sich jeder Tag wie ein Freitag an – was in diesem Fall leider nichts mit dem Gefühl bevorstehenden Wochenendes zu tun hat. Wir haben jede Menge zu tun. Der nächste wichtige Schritt, vor dem wir stehen, ist der Erwerb sowie die Einarbeitung in die Software, mit der wir die Herstellung der Animation von A bis Z – Rough Animation, Clean Up, Kolorierung und Compositing – durchführen. Mit anderen Worten: Der Beginn der Animation steht tatsächlich bevor und ist momentan nur noch eine Frage der Technik (nicht dass wir nicht längst zergehen würden vor dem Wunsch endlich loszulegen).

Vorher jedoch müssen wir noch ein bisschen für die freie Wirtschaft arbeiten. Das ernährt uns und macht auch Freude… aber wir fragen uns manchmal schon, woher wir die Zeit für alles nehmen sollen.

Currently every day feels like Friday – which unfortunately doesn’t have anything to do with starting into the weekend. In fact, a large workload is lying ahead of us. The next important step to be taken is to buy and get familiar with the software which will handle all our needs from A to Z: rough and clean up animation, colouring, compositing. The begin of animation is approaching fast now and is not a matter of will (we’ve been hot for it for weeks and months now!) but merely of technology.

Before that however we have to work a little bit for the market to get us fed. It’s also fun… but naturally we sometimes ask ourselves the question where to take the time from for all this!
