21. Juli 2016: Bucharest vibes

Vor einem Monat waren wir mit „Employee of the Day“ zu Gast auf dem Ploieşti International Fantasy, Thriller, Horror & Science Fiction Short Film Festival. Ploieşti ist eine rumänische Stadt mit etwas über 200.000 Einwohnern, ziemlich genau zwischen Bukarest und den Karpaten. Alex hat sich aus dem Anlass auf die Reise begeben, der Empfang durch das junge Festivalteam war ein ausgesprochen freundlicher und die Begegnung mit Rumänien voller neuer, ungesehener Eindrücke. Auch wurde unser Film gut und mit interessierten Fragen aufgenommen (ein etwas ausführlicherer Eindruck davon findet sich auf unserer Facebook-Seite).

Nach vier Festivaltagen stand noch die Hauptstadt auf der Agenda. Bukarest, so erwies sich, ist ein ziemlich einzigartiger Mix aus Architektur diversester Epochen; von fantastischen alten Villen, Jugendstil- und Bauhaus-Wohnhäusern über den extremen Brutalismus aus Ceauşescu-Tagen bis hin zu den Glas- und Stahltürmen der Jetztzeit. Die Kontraste, die sich dem Betrachter an nahezu jeder Ecke auftun, sind hart, mitunter krass. Es gibt vieles, was einem ins Gesicht schlägt, wovon man zugleich den Blick nicht wenden kann – und ebenso vieles, was eine seltsam gebrochene Schönheit hat. Eine unfassbare Palette an Grautönen, sei es nackter Beton oder rieselnder Putz, und überall darüber: Werbung. In allen Farben und den monströsesten Größen. Der Kapitalismus hat Fuß gefasst in diesem postsozialistischen Ambiente wie ein Pilz nach Starkregen; es war sichtbar.

Manche Ansichten, Fassaden und Gebäudedetails lagen vom Gefühl her bemerkenswert nahe an unserem Film, weshalb wir hiermit ein paar davon dokumentieren – und wodurch Bukarest sozusagen ein prototypischer Ort für „Employee of the Day“ ist. Wären wir vor Jahren hier gewesen, die Stadt hätte fraglos die perfekte Inspirationsquelle abgegeben. Mulțumesc!

One month ago „Employee of the Day“ was invited at the Ploieşti International Fantasy, Thriller, Horror & Science Fiction Short Film Festival. Ploieşti is a Romanian city of more than 200,000 residents, about halfway between Bucharest and the Carpathians. Alex went on the journey, the reception by the young festival team was an exceptionally friendly one and the encounter with Romania full of many new, unseen things. Also our film was received well and with interest (more details on our Facebook page).

After four festival days the Romanian capital came onto the agenda. Bucharest – as could be seen – is a rather unique mix of architecture from various eras; the scope reaching from great old mansions, art nouveau and Bauhaus residential buildings to the extreme brutalism of Ceauşescu days up to the glass and steel towers of the present. Strong, even stark contrasts display themselves to the viewer at almost every corner. There are enough sights that are like a slap in the face, which you can’t turn your eye away from anyway – and quite some impressions speaking of an odd, broken beauty. An incredible range of shades of gray, be it bare concrete or plaster rippling, and everywhere on top of it: advertisings. Multicolored and in monstrous sizes. Capitalism has taken root in this post-socialist ambience like mushrooms after heavy rain; it was clearly visible.

Some views, facades and building details felt remarkably close to our film, which is reason enough for us to share them – and which sort of makes Bucharest a prototypical place for „Employee of the Day“. If we had been there years ago, the city unquestionably would have made the perfect source of inspiration. Mulţumesc!

12. Dezember 2015: Wahrgenommen und erkannt werden … To be perceived and recognized

2015 neigt sich dem Ende, und damit auch ein Jahr aktiver Festivalauswertung unseres Films. Man kann sagen, wir haben aus allen Rohren gefeuert, was das betrifft. Einen Peak bildet dabei sicherlich die herbstliche Festivalsaison mit den Monaten Oktober und November, während denen „Employee of the Day“ in dichter Abfolge auf annähernd 20 Festivals weltweit gezeigt wurde. Auch drei Ehrungen fallen schönerweise in diese Zeitspanne: „Best Debut“ auf dem Sarmat International Independent Film Festival in Orenburg/Russland, bester Animationsfilm bei Cinetekton! In Puebla/Mexiko sowie der Spezialpreis der Jury beim PiGrecoZen FilmFest in Ancona/Italien. Die schriftliche Begründung, die letzteres für die Auszeichnung gefunden hat (Wortlaut auf unserer Facebook-Seite), zeigt uns dabei, wie präzise der Film offenbar verstanden wurde. Bei all den Zweifeln, die man als Filmemacher immer mal hat, macht das vor allem eins: glücklich und dankbar. Auch die Rückmeldungen, die uns auf persönlicher Ebene erreichen, waren über das Jahr hinweg gut und anerkennend – wiewohl wir erfahren, dass „Employee“ nicht notwendigerweise als heiterer oder einfacher Film wahrgenommen wird. Nicht, dass uns das nicht bewusst gewesen wäre. Aber wir haben jetzt den Aufschluss darüber, dass es beim Ansehen auch so empfunden wird.

Als vielleicht interessanteste Entwicklung der vergangenen Monate ergab sich, dass wir auf gleich mehreren Festivals für Film und Architektur gezeigt worden sind. Nachdem wir bereits in Karlsruhe in einem dem Thema Stadtentwicklung gewidmeten Umfeld präsentiert wurden (siehe letzter Blogpost vom 15. Mai 2015), liefen wir im September bei Cinetekton!, in der Folge auf dem Arquitectura Film Festival in Santiago de Chile, sowie beim Arquiteturas Film Festival in Lissabon. Alexander hat „Employee“ aus diesem Anlass Anfang Oktober in der portugiesischen Hauptstadt vertreten – und ein herzliches und mit Herzblut kuratiertes Festival kennengelernt. Zu entdecken war, dass eine weltweite Szene von Filmfestivals existiert, die sich speziell der Schwerpunktsetzung Architektur und Stadtplanung verschrieben haben – und sich überaus vielschichtig und visuell spannend damit befassen, auf welche Weise Menschen (zusammen-) leben respektive ihr Lebensumfeld gestalten. Wir freuen uns darüber, dass wir mit unserem Film in diesem Kontext verortet werden, und fühlen uns – viele Jahre nach einem Field Trip nach Berlin-Marzahn und dem Fotografieren von Betonfassaden am Alexanderplatz – durchaus an der richtigen Adresse.

Auch für das kommende Jahr 2016 zeichnen sich bereits erste Festivaltermine ab; so zum Beispiel das Victoria Film Festival in Kanada im Februar und das Science Fiction & Fantasy Short Film Festival in Seattle im März. Wir freuen uns drauf – und wünschen ganz in diesem Sinne frohes Fest und guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr!

2015 draws to a close, and thus also a year of submitting our film to festivals actively. One can say we fired on all cylinders, for that matter. A peak was certainly reached in the autumn festival season with October and November, during which „Employee of the Day“ was shown at approximately 20 festivals worldwide in quick succession. Three awards fell into that period: „Best Debut“ at the Sarmat International Independent Film Festival in Orenburg / Russia, best animated film at Cinetekton! In Puebla / Mexico and the Special Prize of the Jury at PiGrecoZen FilmFest in Ancona / Italy. The jury statement by the latter (here on our Facebook page) was proof to us how well our work has been comprehended. Despite all the doubts one encounters as a filmmaker from time to time, this, above all, is reason to be happy and grateful. Throughout the year, the feedback we received on a personal level was good and appreciative as well – although we’ve learnt that „Employee“ is not necessarily perceived as a cheerful or easy film. Not that we wouldn’t have been aware. But we now know that it’s also felt by viewers.

The maybe most interesting development of recent months has been that we were shown at several festivals for film and architecture. First we were screened in Karlsruhe in an urban development-themed program (see last blog post from May 15^th 2015); we then ran at Cinetekton! In September, as a result of that at the Arquitectura Film Festival in Santiago de Chile, and at the Arquiteturas Film Festival in Lisbon. Alexander presented “Employee” in the Portuguese capital in early October – and got to know a warm and well-curated festival. It comes as a real discovery: There exists a global scene of film festivals solely dedicated to architecture and urban planning, concerned with how people live and design their living spaces, presenting multilayered and visually exciting films. We are delighted to find ourselves in this context and feel quite in the right place – years after making a research trip to Berlin-Marzahn and taking photographs of concrete facades at Alexanderplatz.

We’re also happy to announce first festival screenings for 2016, such as the Victoria Film Festival in Canada in February and the Science Fiction & Fantasy Short Film Festival in Seattle in March. We are looking forward to it – and wish a very merry Christmas and happy new year!
