Hier sehen wir sie auf dem Weg zur Arbeit – und das ist erst der Anfang.

Do you remember Jenny (blogged on September 9th, 2009)? – After having successfully finished animation on Vern, the male protagonist, and bringing Barbra ever closer to completion Alex’ full dedication has shifted to Jenny and he’s worked on our female fatso for two weeks now. Here we have her on her way to work – and that’s just the beginning.

Also, noch mal weniger blumig: Nach der letzten Aktualisierung unseres Leicareels hatten wir zum ersten Mal übereinstimmend das Gefühl, dass das, was wir seit einiger Zeit fabrizieren, ein stimmiges Ganzes ergibt. „Es wird ein Film draus“, sagt man in so einem Moment gern, und man kann es nicht besser ausdrücken. Immer größere Abschnitte der Leica, die bis dahin nur aus statischen Storyboard- und Layout-Eindrücken bestanden, füllen sich mit fertiger Animation, teilweise sogar schon koloriert und mit ersten Effekten versehen; Farben, Schatten und Licht beginnen plötzlich eine visuelle Klammer zu bilden und die Beispielmusik eine akustische. Mit seltener Klarheit beginnt man auch zu erkennen, was funktioniert und was nicht, was kürzer ausfallen oder eventuell noch mal neu gemacht werden sollte: ein untrügliches Zeichen dafür, dass der Film zu etwas heranwächst, was mehr bildet als nur die Summe seiner Teile und, wenn man so möchte, seine eigene innere Logik durchzusetzen beginnt.

Dahinzukommen hat ein liebes langes Weilchen gedauert. Trotzdem entsinnen wir uns, dass das bei früheren Filmen ähnlich war. Dass man erst Material sammelte, zusammentrug, konstruierte – immer mit der vagen Hoffnung im Hinterkopf, dass das Konstrukt auch Sinn macht. Denn so kleinteilig, wie Animation als Prozess ist, sieht man schon mal den Wald vor lauter Bäumen nicht mehr. Und dann ist da dieser Moment des „Umkippens“: wenn quasi genügend kritische Masse vorhanden ist um eine Kettenreaktion auszulösen. Vielleicht ist es sogar das größte Glücksmoment innerhalb einer Produktion. Wir sind zuversichtlich und fragen uns, ist das schon das Bergfest?

Sich verdichtende Eindrücke ... impressions building up

While being glued to the audiobook of „The Dome“ and listening to how things evolve in that ficticious world by Stephen King something great happened: our own world began to breathe like a little human appearing on a sonogram. This naturally implies that it still has to grow until it is going to fledge. Anyhow the first intakes of breath are strong, unmistakable and longing for existence.

So again, less flowery: after the last update of the leica reel we both felt for the first time that our work comes together as a whole. „It’s becoming a movie“ one is likely to say – simply there is no better expression. So far we only had static storyboard and layout images for the leica which by now turn into ever bigger sections filled with animation. Some parts are even colored and making use of effects. Colors and lighting begin to build a framework for the visual, muscial drafts one for the accustic. In a moment of clarity we recognize what works and what does not, where timing needs to be adjusted and what should be improved: a clear message that the film grows into something that is more than just the sum of its parts and, if you will, has started to enforce its own internal logic.

It took quite a little while to get us there.  At the same time we recall that the process went similar when working on former projects. With the vague hope for a construct that makes sense in mind we carried together many individual components. For a process as intricate as animation one does not always see the wood for the trees. But finally with the critical mass assembled things start to shift and trigger a chain reaction. Perhaps it even marks the happiest moment within a production. Confidently we ask ourselves: are we over the hump already?

While Berlin struggles with undefinable meterological conditions it’s not only a forth computer which heats up the studio. Even in July our character Barbra stars as the heroine, presented here in a first take fully cleaned and colored. Put on the background and combined with a first trial of body shadow effects a newly rendered image takes us from an idea to a possible visual result. Having established the look of the movie in the backgrounds already it now unfolds through the characters, too. This illustrates that we – together with some more magic to come – seem to be on the right track for the visualization of our project.

Der Gebrauch von Photoshop und TVPaint – wie unsere regelmäßigen Leser mitverfolgen können – hat einiges verändert. Zerknülltes Papier gibt es nicht mehr; stattdessen allenfalls holzschnittartige Artefakte, wo mit dem Plastikstift herumradiert wurde. Welche Entstehungsgeschichte eine einzelne Zeichnung möglicherweise gehabt hat, ist dadurch nicht mehr nachvollziehbar. Umgekehrt sucht man bei sporadischen Ausflügen mit dem „analogen“ Bleistift schon mal vergeblich nach Undo.

Artefakte ... artifacts

Bleibt ein Teil der Zeichnung unverändert, so kopieren oder stempeln wir ihn in Sekunden, schieben und drehen ihn auf der Arbeitsfläche solange hin und her, bis er dort sitzt, wo wir ihn haben wollen. Die Duplikate, die Copy & Paste für uns fertigt, sind absolut exakt. Man muss sich dies vergegenwärtigen, weil in einer Zeit, da das für die meisten selbstverständlich und banal ist, gerne ausgeblendet wird, dass dies bis in die 90er Jahre hinein im Zeichentrick noch nicht etabliert war. Die digitalen Erleichterungen, von denen wir profitieren, sind noch nicht sonderlich alt, und wir können behaupten, die letzten Ausläufer des prädigitalen Zeichentricks noch persönlich ausgekostet zu haben – inklusive der Übertragung der Zeichnungen auf transparente Folie („Ink“) und der sich anschließenden Kolorierung („Paint“), bei der die Farbe genau im richtigen Verhältnis angerührt sein musste, um auf den Folien keine Blasen zu werfen.

Auch das Aufnehmen der Phasen unter einer Videokamera zum Testen der Animation („Linetest“) entfällt, weil in dem Moment, da wir die Phasen in den Rechner hineingezeichnet haben, sie bereits „aufgenommen“ sind, auf der Zeitleiste vorliegen und als Film abgespielt werden können. Der Animationsprozess an sich bleibt aber beim Alten: zunächst die Hauptphasen („Keys“) – die Eckpunkte der Bewegung -, dann nach und nach die Zwischenphasen („Breakdowns“ und „Inbetweens“). Die Dauer jedes Einzelbildes („Timing“) ist mit einem Mausklick beliebig veränderbar, die Anzahl übereinander positionierbarer Bildebenen theoretisch unendlich – einzig begrenzt durch den zur Verfügung stehenden Arbeitsspeicher, der zum Maß aller Dinge wird. Wir sind mit einem Amiga-Linetest-Programm groß geworden – Take Two, wir grüßen Dich! – Zu Zeiten des seligen Walt Disney gab es aber noch nicht einmal das. Der Animator musste sein Timing vollständig im Kopf abschätzen können – und seinen Linetest dann auf Film (!) aufnehmen lassen, ehe er etwaige Korrekturen vornehmen konnte.

Schließlich können wir die Hintergründe, auf denen sich die Handlung zuträgt, wie jede sonstige Bildquelle auch sofort mit unserer Animation kombinieren bzw. sie dahinter legen. Passgenauigkeit ist jederzeit gewährleistet – solange man sich nicht mit den Konfusionen verschiedener Pixel-Seitenverhältnisse herumquält. Im übrigen schadet es nicht, wenn man weiss, welche Programmfunktion in welchem Fenster oder unter welchem Menü zu finden ist … oder ist das vielleicht nur eine Verlagerung von Komplexität? – Wir bemerken hier, dass wir an einer Schnittstelle von analog zu digital gelernt haben. Die Freiheit intuitiven Herantastens trifft auf eine kontrollierbare, funktionale Arbeitsumgebung.

When we took our first steps in animation 15 years ago we were used to draw on paper – usually several sheets on top of each other, backlit. Each action planned came to life for the very first time by flipping through the paper which had been carefully fixed on the light table. For any mistake there was an eraser or paper bin. Back to start! – Portions of a drawing which stayed unchanged over the course of an action were copied to a separate sheet of paper and traced over and over again. From time to time this felt like a precision job on an assembly line – and it can still turn out like that nowadays.

Using Photoshop and TVPaint changed quite some things – as our frequent followers have learnt to know. There is no more scrunched-up paper; instead you will explore woodcut-like traces brought to you by your digital new toy. The history of a single drawing is not apparent any more. Having said that, you might miss the undo button when going analog with a traditional pencil again.

Whenever a portion of a drawing is going to stay unchanged we copy or make a stamp of it within a second, move or rotate it on our workspace until we like what we see. Every duplicate is one hundred percent exact.  In a time when most people take it for granted one mustn’t forget that these techniques were not commonplace in hand drawn animation right into the 90ies. Digital benefits aren’t old enough to preclude us from gaining first-hand experience with the predigital. This includes inking the clean-up drawing on a transparent cel, followed by mixing the colors at the right ratio to avoid bubbles on the cels when painting them.

Capturing drawings with a video camera for testing has become unnecessary as well, for all drawings are digital already when being created and can be played forward and backward. With the keyframes done first and followed by breakdowns and inbetweens the process of animation however basically stays the same. The duration of every single frame can be set easily with a mouse-click, the number of image layers seems unlimited – given that your hardware’s working memory turns into the measure of all things. We happened to grow up using an Amiga linetest program – Nimm Zwei, how are you?! – During Walt Disney’s lifetime nothing of that even existed. An animator had to estimate the timing of his action at the very beginning and record his linetest onto film stock (!) before he could make any improvements.

Finally we are able to import background layers – or any other image source for that matter – and combine them with the animation immediately. Precision is guaranteed – if you don’t get confused by pixel aspect ratios. Nevertheless it is helpful to know where to find your tasks in the interface … or is this just a shift of complexity? We have come to realize that we have learnt our craft during the transition from analog to digital. Trial & error versus control & functionality.

Today’s Employee of the Day is Barbra – or Bäärbl as we took her to our hearts with a south-German twinkle. Although she never had any experience in the movie buisness she became our main actress. We found her at the Alexanderplatz on her way to work at the VEB Happa Inc.

Anfänglich etwas schüchtern bewies Sie aber recht schnell, dass Sie das Zeug für unsere Heldin hat. Nach einem Jahr Animationsarbeit naht ihre Fertigstellung in 13 Szenen mit 60 Einstellungen.

Keine graue Maus ... not a mousy person

Wie wäre es mit einem Häppchen Animation,frisch aus unserem wachsenden Konstrukt herausgenommen?

Erwähnen sollte man, dass es sich um unseren Hauptprotagonisten Vern handelt – über welchen noch zu reden sein wird -, und dass er sich hier gerade im Angesicht einiger unschöner Vorkommnisse befindet, die draußen vor seinem Fenster passieren. Welche das sind, bleibt erst mal Betriebsgeheimnis. Aber man wird später genug davon durchs Fenster sehen. Versprochen.

Was in der Einstellung noch fehlt, sind Effektanimation, finale Lichtsetzung für den Raum und die Kolorierung der Figur (welche der Einfachheit halber solange weiss gehalten ist).

Hinsichtlich Wasserstand können wir vermelden, dass zwei von vier Charakteren animationsmäßig schon recht weit gediehen sind. Es existieren zur Stunde längere zusammenhängende Passagen mit durchgehend Bewegung, was sich gut anfühlt.

This scene shows Vern, the main protagonist – whom we still have to introduce to you -, in the face of some really unpleasant events happening outside his apartment. Naturally we must maintain a low profile about that at this point. But you will see enough of it through the big white window in the final version. Promise!

Effects animation, the lighting of the room and colouring of the character (who will appear white until then) are still to be added.

Meanwhile a considerable amount of animation has been done for two of four characters. We have several passages with continuous movement which feels good.

Was für Neuigkeiten gibt es? – Die erste Szene – bestehend aus acht Einstellungen -  ist in der Rohfassung komplett animiert und liefert uns gut fünzig zusammenhängende Sekunden.

Da wir achronologisch zu Werke gehen, ist aber schon mehr fertig. TVPaint hat unser Arbeiten bisher merklich beschleunigt, wie es es zugleich auch verändert. Copy und Paste hat ins Animieren Einzug gehalten, Custom Brushes (d.h. legetrickartige Fertigbauteile der Charaktere, s. u.) gehören zu den Werkzeugen, die wir nicht mehr missen wollen, und überhaupt ist man mit jeder Phase plötzlich erheblich flexibler als auf dem Papier.

Gleichzeitig verheddern wir uns von Zeit zu Zeit in technischen Fallstricken. Die meisten davon sind glücklicherweise überschaubar. Allerdings gibt es auch Tage wie den heutigen, an dem ein Cintiq auf jeden noch so schmeichelvollen Annäherungsversuch einfach nicht mehr reagieren mag und man nach Stunden von Kabel-Umsteckorgien, Treiberinstallation und Hotline-Anrufen schlussendlich begreift, dass die USB-Ports vom neuen Windows 7-Rechner aus irgendeinem Grund nicht so einsatzbereit sind, wie sie sein sollten. Generell stellen wir fest, dass technische Neuerungen der IT-Industrie inzwischen oft eher mit Gängelung zu tun haben (völlig gleichgültig übrigens, ob Microsoft oder ein Apfel draufpappt) und es offenkundig nicht mehr die Maschinen sind, die auf eine bestimmte Weise funktionieren sollen, sondern die Benutzer. Für jeden Neukauf, jedes Update und jedes Sch…Pop-Up, das auf dem Bildschirm ungefragt erscheint, lässt das in Zukunft nur das absolut Schlimmste erahnen (und wahrscheinlich machen wir auch gerade deshalb diesen Film).

Last but not least beteiligt sich seit neuestem mit Annette Jung von den Trick-Piraten und Talking Animals eine liebe Freundin und Kollegin als Koproduzentin an unserem Projekt, worüber wir uns sehr freuen!

What’s new, cats? – The rough animation for one sequence – consisting of eight different takes – has been completed and gives a first coherent flow of a total of 50 seconds.

Actually we finished more – we animate achronologial. Working with TVPaint seems to speed up things and changes the traditional processes we are used to: copy and paste, customized brushes and undo have become highly appreciated tools providing more flexibility as on paper.

At the same time we get entangled in technical pitfalls – which fortunately aren’t too complex. But there are days like today when a Cintiq is neither willing to react to any schmoozing attempts nor to perform as needed. It takes hours of re-plugging, driver installations and finally hotline calls to understand the simplicity of things: USB ports of the new Windows 7 machine decided to refuse to work. Thus, one thing leading to the next: IT innovations (no matter if Microsoft or fruity ones) are perfect examples of dominating behaviour. It is obvious that those innovations are not meant to adapt to the user but to make him adapt to technology. Each product purchase, update requests and f…ing pop-up windows keep you busy without asking – the foreshadow of a near, forbidding future (and a good reason why we do this animation).

Mit anderen Worten: Wir sind offiziell am Animieren und opfern ab jetzt sozusagen unser Dasein, damit unsere Protagonisten leben können. Was man hier im Bild sehr schön erkennt, ist die sogenannte Leuchttisch-Funktion von TV Paint. D.h. wie bei einem herkömmlichen physischen Zeichentisch kann man praktisch „Unterlicht“ benutzen und sehen, wie sich die aktuell „oben“ aufliegende Zeichnung innerhalb der Gesamtbewegung verhält. Nur eins von etlichen sinnvollen Features, die das Arbeiten in dieser Software bis dato recht angenehm machen.

Da ab jetzt die ganzen kommenden Monate mehr oder minder dasselbe beinhalten, werden unsere Tage nicht unbedingt so abwechslungsreich wie letztens die DAX-Kurve. Mal sehen, was uns als Unterhaltungsprogramm einfällt. Irgendwelche arbeitslosen Animateure da draussen??

We don’t know exactly what happened between the beginning of March and today. Fact is we went to work every day, just like this fellow here.

In other words: We’re officially into animation now and give our lives so that our characters can come to life. What you can recognize in the picture pretty well is the light table function of our new software TVPaint. Just like with a traditional animator’s desk you can switch on a „light box“ and judge your drawing in relation to all the other drawings of your animation. And that’s only one out of a bunch of useful features which have made working in this program convenient so far.

The next months will be stuffed with basically the same kind of work done over and over; so our days won’t be as varied as, let’s say, the stock chart at NYSE recently. But anyway we have to go for entertainment value – any clowns out there for our home resort??

Nachdem wir diesbezüglich in Photoshop schon einiges durchexerziert haben (was übrigens nicht so unpraktikabel war, wie man vielleicht meinen könnte), naht nun unweigerlich der Punkt, da wir für für die Animation ein eigenes Programm benötigen – sprich eines, in dem man so animieren kann wie an einem klassischen Leuchttisch mit Papier, Bleistift, Drehscheibe und Unterlicht. Was das angeht, sind wir noch komplett unbeleckt und springen ins kalte Wasser. Wir haben uns mal die Demoversion von TV Paint angeschaut… und gelangen nach Herumprobieren, Herumfluchen und einigen Fingerübungen zu folgenden Zwischenergebnissen (das erste Studienjahr Filmhochschule lässt grüßen):

Und dann fiel uns ja noch auf: Das Studio – und mit ihm der Blog – sind dieser Tage ein Jahr alt respektive online! – Ein Jahr, das, wie wir finden, rapide verflogen ist, dafür aber für das Projekt etliche Wegmarken bereit hielt: von der Fertigstellung der Layouts und Backgrounds über die finalisierten Character Designs bis zum getimten Animationslayout. Und parallel dazu natürlich noch Brötchen verdienen. Wir freuen uns, dass wir so weit gut zusammen funktionieren, bis dato keine nennenswerten Stolpersteine am Wegesrand aufgetaucht sind (wir haben sogar Spaß!) und wir unsere Arbeit (trotz Berlin-Mitte vor der Haustür) in ruhiger, heimeliger und täglich verkaterter Atmosphäre tun können. Glückwünsche jeglicher Art nehmen wir hier gerne entgegen …

Katerfreude: Storyboard jetzt in Farbe!

These days we’re deep into evaluating software … in search for nothing but the best animation tool. We’ve had quite some ‘training lessons’ in Photoshop already (which turned out to be not that impractical as one might think); but now we finally must purchase an appropriate program – one that we can use like an oldfashioned lightbox with an animation disc, paper and pencil. Concerning this we’re absolute newbies, jumping in at the deep end. We had a look at the demo version of TV Paint and after some trial and error, swearing and practising like back in film school days we’re facing the first results (see above).

Besides we noticed that the studio – and this blog – got one year old! Time passed by way too fast; but anyway there were several milestones along the way such as finishing the layouts and backgrounds, the character designs and the animation layout, and, last but by no means least, earning money for a living. We’re very glad that our collaboration has flown smoothly so far and we didn’t encounter any major stumbling blocks (oh yes, we have fun, too!). And the best thing is: Despite having the heart of Berlin at our very doorstep we work in a quiet and comfortable atmosphere, two male cats playing around our feet every day. Happily accepting any congrats …
